Current practice and challenges in interprofessional education of healthcare professionals

ReFEEHS Thematic Workshop 2 (Novi Sad, November 17-19, 2016)

 

Faculty of Medicine, University of Novi Sad, was the host of the second ReFEEHS Project Thematic Workshop. It was organized and accredited as the National symposium with international participation, introducing the project aims further to health professionals from the region. The event was highly attended, due to the topic actuality. The issue of interprofessional education was discussed through many aspects – development, resources required, healthcare professionals’ compentences, evaluation and the readiness of the healthcare students for interprofessional education and collaborative practice. The insight into the current trends in interprofessional education in Ireland, Portugal and Hungary were presented to the public. Stakeholders from the academia, clinical settings, institutes, healthcare professionals chambers, public health institutions, and government attended to seven presentations and three workshops.

 

Challenges and opportunities in interprofessional education were practically assessed in the workshops on cases in managing critically ill patients, chronic non-communicable diseases- diabetes, and oral health promotion. Students’ teams consisted of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing delegates took an active part in the workshops, but also in the discussion following presentations.

 

ReFEEHS promotion and dissemination activities preceded the main event. Discussion panel devoted to “How to improve teaching competences in medical education?” gained a lot of attention of the academic staff and students, and resulted in constructive debate. Faculty of Medicine was the venue for ReFEEHS Open Day activities, where students of all healthcare professions were informed about the project aims by brochures and display screens.

ReFEEHS working groups and Steering Committee meetings were held on the next day. Reports on recent activities and further plans for experiential and interprofessional education, teaching competences development, and dissemination of the project results were stated and discussed.

ReFEEHS Thematic Workshop 3 Report was published in Archive of Pharmacy Journal, Publisher Pharmaceutical Association of Serbia (Arh. farm. 2017; 67: 54-55).
